Drag, Drop, Done: Faster File and Email Handling in New harmon.ie

Drag, drop, done. New harmon.ie 2.1

TL;DR We write every word in our blog posts, but asked AI to summarize it

New harmon.ie 2.1: improved drag and drop, move emails to Microsoft 365 when you save, open files in any desktop app, and new admin controls.

New harmon.ie is your Outlook sidebar for managing email and documents in Microsoft 365, and version 2.1 is about movement: getting files and emails where they need to go with less friction. This release brings improved drag and drop across the add-in and the desktop app, the option to move an email into Microsoft 365 when you save it instead of leaving a copy behind, more ways to open files, and quicker access to your SharePoint sites. Admins get new controls over which sites users can add and whether saved emails are deleted from Outlook.

Drag Files Wherever They Need to Go

Moving a file used to mean opening it, downloading it, or bouncing between windows. In 2.1, you drag it. Inside harmon.ie you can drag a file from one Microsoft 365 location to another to move or copy it, for example from OneDrive into a SharePoint folder, without leaving the sidebar.

When you are writing an email, drag a file onto the new drop area at the top of the sidebar, then drop it on Add as file or Add as attachment to add it to the message. You decide whether the recipient gets a copy or a link to the version in Microsoft 365. If you want to send links to files that already live in SharePoint or OneDrive, the attach a Microsoft 365 file to an email workflow now starts with a simple drag.

In the desktop app, drag and drop reaches beyond harmon.ie. Drag files out onto File Explorer or your desktop to copy or move them to your computer, onto an email to attach them, or onto another app that accepts files. It is a natural way to move content between Microsoft 365 and everything else you work in.

Move Emails to Microsoft 365 Instead of Leaving Copies Behind

Saving an important email to SharePoint has always been the reliable way to keep it as a record. Now you can go a step further: harmon.ie can delete the email from Outlook after it saves it, so saving moves the message into Microsoft 365 rather than leaving a duplicate in your mailbox.

This keeps mailboxes leaner and reduces the copies of a message scattered across Outlook and SharePoint, which matters when you care about a single source of truth for email compliance and retention. Nothing is lost in the process: the email moves to your Deleted Items folder and stays recoverable if you need it back.

It is off by default and entirely your choice. Turn it on in Settings when you want saving to move emails rather than copy them, and leave it off when you would rather keep the original in place. Saving itself stays a deliberate action, so an email only moves when you choose to save it to SharePoint.

Open Any File in the App You Prefer

Some files are easiest to work with in a specific desktop application. In 2.1, Open in app opens any file type in its default Windows app, and a new Open with action lets you choose which installed app opens a file instead of accepting the default. Open a drawing in the tool your team uses for drawings, or a PDF in your preferred reader, straight from harmon.ie. Both actions work when the harmon.ie desktop app is installed and running.

Your SharePoint Sites, Ready When You Sign In

Finding the right SharePoint site should not be a setup task. You no longer add your frequently used sites by hand: the sites you follow in SharePoint appear automatically in a new Followed sites group and stay up to date, with nothing to configure. The places you already work in are ready to use the moment you sign in.

When a site you need is not in the suggestions, you can add it by pasting its URL, a popular capability from harmon.ie Classic that 2.1 brings back. Between followed sites and add-by-URL, getting to the right library is quicker, which is the kind of everyday friction that good Outlook and SharePoint integration is supposed to remove.

More Control for Admins

Version 2.1 gives administrators more say over how harmon.ie behaves across the organization:

  • Restrict which SharePoint sites users can add: Use allow and block lists, matched by SharePoint URL patterns, in the provisioning file to control which sites users may add. Restrictions are enforced at every entry point in harmon.ie, so people stay within approved locations. A frequently requested capability from enterprise customers.
  • Set delete-after-save for your organization: Decide whether saved emails are deleted from Outlook across the whole organization, or leave the choice to each user.

If you are evaluating harmon.ie for your team, the IT Approval Kit covers how deployment and central configuration work.

Designed for the Way You Work in Microsoft 365

Every change in 2.1 comes back to the same idea: your email and your documents live in Microsoft 365, and the work of moving between them should be quick and obvious. Dragging a file where it belongs, saving an email as a record without leaving a copy behind, opening a document in the right app, reaching the sites you use most: these are small moments that add up across a working day. New harmon.ie keeps them inside Outlook, where the work already happens.
